Dean Pope Receives NABL’s Kiel Distinguished Service Award
RICHMOND, Va. — The National Association of Bond Lawyers honored Hunton & Williams LLP’s Robert Dean Pope with its The Frederick O. Kiel Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his extraordinary service to NABL. The award was presented on Thursday, September 10, at the 40th Annual Bond Attorneys’ Workshop in Chicago. Founded in 1979, with more than 2,600 members, NABL is the national organization for the public finance lawyers who serve America’s state and local governments.
“Dean is extraordinarily deserving of the Kiel Distinguished Service Award,” said awards committee member Drew Kintzinger. “Dean has been a tireless contributor to NABL: author of countless comment letters, prodigious speaker and panelist at NABL seminar programs and workshops, and most recently, in the Fred Kiel tradition, serving as Editor of The Bond Lawyer publication. Dean unselfishly contributes to NABL every practice day ― and many weekends, too ― with one goal in mind: to serve NABL members’ interests.”
Pope served as the first Chairman of NABL’s Committee on Financing Health Care Facilities from 1979 to 1982 and served on NABL’s Board of Directors from 1982 until 1989. He was NABL’s President for 1987-88. In 1994 NABL awarded Pope its Bernard P. Friel Medal for distinguished service in public finance. Since 2011, Pope has served as Editor of The Bond Lawyer, NABL’s quarterly publication on developments in public finance law and practice. He also is a former President of the American College of Bond Counsel and a former Vice Chairman of the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board.
In his career of more than 40 years of public finance practice at Hunton & Williams, Pope served as bond counsel, underwriter’s counsel, special disclosure counsel and counsel to numerous state and local government issuers, colleges, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations. He is the author of the book, Making Good Disclosure: The Role and Responsibilities of State and Local Officials under the Federal Securities Laws, published in 2002 by the Government Finance Officers Association.
Pope also is a former President of the Bond Club of Virginia and taught public finance law for seven years at the William & Mary Law School.
