Hunton Andrews Kurth Partner Chip Nunley Receives John C. Kenny Pro Bono Award

October 7, 2020 – Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP is pleased to announce that partner Chip Nunley has been named the recipient of the John C. Kenny Pro Bono Award from the Richmond Bar Association (RBA) for his outstanding achievements in pro bono service. The John C. Kenny Pro Bono Award is annually presented to a Richmond Bar member who has demonstrated dedication to delivery and development of pro bono legal services to the poor or underserved segments of the Richmond metropolitan area.

Nunley has dedicated more than 5,000 hours to pro bono clients over the past decade. He served as Hunton Andrew Kurth's Richmond pro bono chair for six years and led the office to 100 percent lawyer participation with more than 60,000 pro bono hours dedicated by Richmond lawyers under his leadership. He has been the partner in charge of the firm's George H. Hettrick Church Hill pro bono office since 2015. Nunley has personally represented more than 75 clients in landlord/tenant disputes, assisted 24 victims of domestic violence in obtaining a protective order, represented families in guardianship cases and has offered numerous consults to clients in the office. Outside of the firm, Nunley serves as a board member of many volunteer organizations. He is the immediate past President and current member of the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society’s Board of Directors, a former member of the Board of the Legal Aid Justice Center and a member of HomeAgain’s Board. Nunley is also the former chair of the Virginia State Bar's Access to Justice Committee. In 2013, he was appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia to its Access to Justice Commission, a position which he still serves in today.

Nunley received the Richmond Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico Award in 1990 for his work on the Bar’s model pro bono housing and domestic law program, which became a template for other local bars across the nation and for which the Richmond Bar was awarded the prestigious Harrison Tweed Award by the American Bar Association. Additionally, Chip received the George Hettrick Award from the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation for his work representing tenants in an apartment complex in Richmond's Northside who suffered tremendously at the hands of an absentee, out-of-state, LLC landlord.
