On December 1, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission called for a do-not-track option allowing internet users to limit the ability of advertisers to collect consumer data. Several media including Reuters and Bloomberg spoke with Lisa Sotto, who heads the firm’s privacy practice.

In addition, on December 16, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued its “Green Paper” on privacy to outline Commerce’s privacy recommendations and proposed initiatives, which contemplate the establishment of enforceable codes of conduct, collaboration among privacy stakeholders and the creation of a Privacy Policy Office in the Department of Commerce. Lisa Sotto told PC World and LA Times: “There has been a real hunger for rules of the road when it comes to domestic privacy issues, and this would put a road map in place.”
