On December 3, 2012, the Centre for Information Policy Leadership (the “Centre”) at Hunton & Williams will co-host a special International Association of Privacy Professionals (“IAPP”) KnowledgeNet meeting in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting will explore global developments in accountability in the context of the proposed EU Data Protection Regulation and the impact of accountability on data protection management.

Although accountability is built into the proposed Regulation, it is not clear whether the draft provisions are consistent with the evolving global consensus regarding accountability. That said, there is no question that accountability will materially change the way data protection professionals manage their privacy programs.

The KnowledgeNet meeting will feature presentations by Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor; Isabelle Vereecken, Legal Advisor, Belgian Data Protection Authority; David Hoffman, Director of Security Policy and Global Privacy Officer, Intel Corporation; and Marty Abrams, President, Centre for Information Policy Leadership. Meeting attendees will learn more about issues such as:

• Data protection authorities’ expectations with respect to comprehensive privacy programs;
• How the essential elements of accountability translate into privacy program requirements; and
• How companies can build compliance through accountability.

Following the presentations, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions in an interactive discussion with the speakers.

The session, which is open to the public free of charge, will begin at 4:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. on December 3, 2012 at Hunton & Williams’ Brussels office at Park Atrium, Rue des Colonies 11, 1000 Brussels, Belgium. The Centre acts as the Secretariat for the Global Accountability Project and has announced that the Polish Data Protection Authority will facilitate the project in 2013.
