On January 7, 2025, the Biden White House announced that a new “Cyber Trust Mark” will begin appearing on products in the U.S. in 2025. The Cyber Trust Mark will denote products that are “cyber secure.”
The new program is similar to Energy Star, the U.S. government-backed label that identifies energy-efficient products. The Federal Communications Commission consulted the public regarding the cybersecurity symbol in 2023 and developed rules establishing a voluntary program in March 2024. Qualifying products can legally display the mark on advertising and packaging if they meet specified cybersecurity standards. The program does not apply to computers or smartphones, but does apply to internet-connected devices such as internet-connected home security cameras, voice-activated shopping devices, smart appliances, fitness trackers, garage door openers and baby monitors.

On February 5, 2026, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed Alabama House Bill 161, the App Store Accountability Act, establishing age categorization, age verification and parental consent requirements for mobile application marketplace providers operating in Alabama, effective January 2027.
On March 5, 2026, the California Privacy Protection Agency announced that the agency had reached a settlement with Ford Motor Company resolving an enforcement action against the company that alleged noncompliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act’s opt-out of sale/sharing rights.
