On Wednesday, October 13, please join us for Part I of a two-part legal writing program designed for our litigators focused on effective advocacy writing. This presentation offers concrete, turnkey suggestions for improving the sequence of: words in sentences; sentences in paragraphs; paragraphs in arguments; and arguments in briefs and other advocative documents. The presentation offers many actual “before and after” examples of legal prose, as well as insights developed over the course of a 27-year career writing, editing, and teaching legal writing. Part II of the program will be offered on October 20.
This program will be taught by David Greenwald. David retired from Cravath’s Litigation Department in 2020. As a partner, David focused his practice on the representation of drug, biotechnology and chemical companies in patent litigation, and the representation of European financial institutions in criminal and regulatory investigations. He also took an active interest in lawyer training and development, overseeing for eight years the Litigation Department’s continuing legal education offerings, and presenting courses and seminars within the Firm throughout his tenure as a partner.
From 1997-2000, Mr. Greenwald served as a prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Before joining Cravath in 1994, Mr. Greenwald served as a clerk to Hon. Richard A. Posner, Chief Judge of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Greenwald was born in New York City. He graduated from Hunter College High School; Harvard College, and the University of Chicago Law School. David is also an active oboe player and a member of the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, with which he regularly records and performs.
