Gerlach will serve as an independent consultant to CIPL in the firm’s Brussels office. She will build on her extensive experience in international data protection and eDiscovery to further CIPL’s EU privacy, data and digital policy agenda.

Gerlach joins CIPL from the law firm Cleary Gottlieb, where she worked as a senior attorney and managed the company’s European eDiscovery Group. At CIPL, Gerlach will focus on a wide range of privacy- and data policy-related topics, including artificial intelligence, data ethics and governance, cross-border data flows, and a plethora of existing and expected EU data laws, including the GDPR, the ePrivacy Directive, the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act and the Data Act. Gerlach will also work closely with CIPL’s international privacy team based in CIPL’s offices in London, Brussels and Washington, DC.

Her breadth of experience will significantly strengthen our capabilities to focus even more deeply on EU data and digital policy, as well as our efforts to promote a holistic approach to responsible and accountable data practices within the EU and beyond. There has never been a more critical time to work on these topics together with business and government leaders from around the world”.

Commenting on her new role, Gerlach said: “I am excited to join CIPL’s prominent team of leading privacy and data policy experts, and to work with industry leaders and policymakers on developing innovative and sustainable approaches to privacy and data policy. Practicable solutions safeguard fundamental rights without stifling beneficial innovation can only be achieved with the cooperation of all stakeholders.”
