Elbert Lin Media Coverage on Christie v. NCAA

Elbert Lin spoke to the Washington Examiner, WTOP, ROI - NJ and the Washington Free Beacon on Christie v. NCAA, the Supreme Court case that will have broad implications for sports wagering and may redefine the federal government’s power over state law. On Dec. 4, the justices reviewed New Jersey’s decision to repeal in part state-law prohibitions on sports gambling in this landmark case. The NCAA, various sports leagues, and the United States contend that a federal law—the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA)—prohibits that partial repeal. The state of New Jersey argued that PASPA’s prohibition on the state’s repeal of its own laws is unconstitutional under the 10th Amendment. Elbert explained at The National Press Club that a Supreme Court decision for New Jersey could be "potentially very far-reaching" and affect other issues including “immigration, firearm control, medical marijuana, and occupational licensing.” The court is expected to rule before the end of June 2018.
