Hunton Andrews Kurth Hosts First-Generation Lawyer Q&A Panel

On March 29, 2022, Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP co-hosted an inaugural First-Generation Lawyer Q&A panel at the University of South Carolina School of Law.  The program aimed to provide mentoring and advice to first-generation law students. Inspiration for the program came from the firm’s First-Generation Pathways program, a pilot program based on one of the winning ideas offered up by summer associates who participated in the 2020 firm-wide summer associate “Hackathon,” or brain-storming competition, where they were challenged to create strategies that enhance diversity and inclusion in the legal industry. 

The firm’s First-Generation Pathways program launched in Fall 2021 consisting of a series of conversations between lawyers at the firm and first-generation law students at schools located near the firm’s Miami office.

Building on the success of that program, Atlanta-based associate, Robert J. Augustin, and Charlotte associate, Patrick C. Macher, represented Hunton Andrews Kurth on the panel alongside two attorneys from Nelson Mullins. Approximately 25 University of South Carolina School of Law students attended the in-person program where panelists discussed their backgrounds and what led them to pursue careers in law, answered students’ questions and offered advice for navigating the law school experience.

First-generation students face unique issues and challenges that can impact their well-being and their overall performance in law school.  These students often are unfamiliar with the law school process and lack mentors or other sources of guidance and advice.

“As a first-generation lawyer myself, and a recent graduate of University of South Carolina School of Law, I see the value in providing support and mentoring opportunities to these law students,” said Augustin.  “I am grateful that the firm sees value in supporting first-generation law students as part of its strong commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.”

The First-Generation Pathways program and the First-Generation Lawyer Q&A panel are part of the firm’s overall effort to increase diversity and inclusion in the legal industry and foster engagement with the next generation of leaders.
