Hunton & Williams LLP Celebrates National Pro Bono Week
NEW YORK — October 25, 2012 — During the week of October 22-26, Hunton & Williams LLP joins lawyers across the country to promote pro bono services to people in need during National Pro Bono Week. Hunton & Williams is honored to represent veterans seeking benefits, assist victims of domestic violence, work to help save lives of those persecuted in their home countries, and protect children who cannot protect themselves.
This week the firm is celebrating their pro bono service, specifically to veterans and children across the country.
The Hunton & Williams Veterans Pro Bono Project has provided firmwide pro bono representation to veterans and active duty service members since 2008. There are currently over 80 active Hunton & Williams lawyer volunteers. Lawyers assist veterans to receive life-long medical benefits and proper ratings for disability benefits and in obtaining proper disability ratings at discharge and from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Hunton & Williams lawyers have assisted over 100 veterans with their legal needs since the program began in 2008.
Hunton & Williams lawyers also dedicate thousands of hours each year to protecting children and advocating for their rights. Lawyers at Hunton & Williams have lobbied for changes in a state's juvenile code, argued for the return of internationally abducted children, assisted in the representation of unaccompanied immigrant children who are subject to deportation proceedings, and served as guardians ad litem in cases where abused, neglected or otherwise at-risk children need a party to advocate on their behalf. Hunton & Williams lawyers have also assisted shelters where sexually abused children and their families can seek information, counseling, support and other treatment assistance.
Hunton & Williams' tradition of pro bono service is well recognized. As a signatory member of the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, its U.S. offices have met or exceeded the goal of providing more than 3 percent of billable time to pro bono service since 1993. For the past three years, 100 percent of Hunton & Williams' lawyers in the United States have participated in pro bono projects, donating more than 50,000 hours of pro bono service in each of the last three fiscal years.
