WASHINGTON — December 3, 2010 — Hunton & Williams LLP recently represented DTE Energy Services (DTEES) in acquiring a significant interest in the Mt. Poso Cogeneration Company power plant near Bakersfield, California. DTEES will operate the plant and co-lead its conversion into a 100 percent renewable power source, primarily running on wood fuel derived from urban wood waste, tree trimmings and agricultural residues. Following the conversion, the plant will provide power to Pacific Gas & Electric Co. under a long-term renewable power purchase agreement, helping the California utility achieve the state’s 33 percent renewable power requirement.

DTEES, a subsidiary of Detroit-based DTE Energy with operations in 26 states, acquires, develops, builds, owns and operates projects for large, energy-intensive industrial customers. The Hunton & Williams team on the transaction included Jeffrey P. Schroeder, Cameron N. Cosby and Eric R. Pogue. They represented DTEES in the acquisition as well as with respect to structuring and contract matters related to the project and the biomass conversion.

Hunton & Williams has had a leading energy and utility practice for more than a century and has represented a broad array of electric utility companies, independent power companies, independent system operators, oil and gas companies, equity investors and lenders to (and developers of) some of the largest energy project financing transactions globally.
