Hunton & Williams To Receive 2015 Burton Award for Legal Writing
WASHINGTON — Hunton & Williams LLP announces the firm will receive the 2015 Distinguished Legal Writing Award from The Burton Foundation for an article coauthored by F. William Brownell and Scott J. Stone, “The Hard Reality for International Climate Agreements in the United States,” published in the April 2014 issue of Atlantic Council. Brownell and Stone are members of the firm’s nationally recognized environmental practice. In the article, they describe the political and legal realities constraining formal participation by the United States and propose a technology-driven alternative for US leadership built on coal as an essential mainstay in the world’s energy mix and supported by the further development and broader deployment of advanced coal technologies, which allow coal to meet environmental goals in balance with energy, economic, and security priorities.
A former head of the firm’s environmental practice, Brownell is chair of the firm’s Executive Committee. He focuses his practice on environmental litigation, regulation and counseling, including climate change regulation and litigation, clean air regulation, environmental licensing and auditing, and waste management and clean water issues.
Stone’s practice focuses on administrative, environmental, and international law, including Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and other environmental regulatory issues, risk and liability issues associated with energy technology development and deployment, corporate sustainability strategies, and international climate and stratospheric ozone negotiations.
The firm’s internationally recognized environmental practice lawyers are devoted to air, water, natural resources, waste, and other matters. The group advises clients at all stages of environmental issues, from initial legislative and policy development, through implementation, compliance, and court challenges.
The Burton Foundation is a nonprofit volunteer, academic organization concentrating on legal writing. In association with the US Library of Congress and its Law Library, the foundation recognizes excellence in legal writing each year by selecting only 30 law firms from 1,000 entries submitted by the nation’s largest and most prestigious law firms.
