Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP is pleased to announce that special counsel Gerard T. “Gerry” Leone, Jr. has been honored by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as a 2024 “Go To Lawyer” for higher education law in the commonwealth.

MLW selected the honorees using a number of criteria, including expertise in their field, familiarity with the nuances of relevant case law, statutes and regulations, their ability to think creatively and identify all options for a client, and their demonstrated track record of success.

Based in Boston, Leone co-heads the firm’s Higher Education practice and leads the firm’s Risk Management and Special Situations group. He serves a variety of clients in matters dealing with legal, regulatory, compliance and ethics issues across practice areas including the entire complex higher education spectrum, litigation, investigations (internal, external and governmental), and special situations. He is adept at advising private individuals and corporate clients and public institutions, helping them achieve their goals and objectives while engaging in front-end planning and prevention in furtherance of risk management; as well as handling and managing problem solving and decision making on behalf of clients when they are confronted with red flag concerns and incidents; and engaging in results-oriented resolutions including mitigation and remediation.

Prior to joining the firm, Leone served as General Counsel to the University of Massachusetts from 2017-2023, where he was the Chief Legal Officer, and an advisor and counsel for the entire UMass system and the President’s Office, Board of Trustees, and related university business entities. He uses that extensive experience to help higher education institutions and secondary schools engage in governance, protect and preserve their organizational reputation and assets, protect and execute critical infrastructure projects, and prevent and resolve civil and criminal legal, regulatory, compliance and ethics issues, matters and disputes in all areas. He acts as external counsel to IHEs, and remains involved in the Boston Bar Association Higher Ed Section and NACUA.
