Pro Bono Efforts by Hunton Andrews Kurth Attorneys Help Keep Disabled Woman in Safe Housing
Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP attorneys, Demitrianna Grekos and Veronica Adams, associates at the Miami office, partnered with Legal Services of Greater Miami through the Legal Services’ Tenants Equal Justice Clinic (TEJC) to successfully assist a local disabled woman and her husband living in a public housing unit in a state of disrepair, including a pest infestation. Grekos and Adams advised the woman of her rights as a tenant and assisted in drafting a Rent Withholding Letter enabling her and her husband to withhold rent until the landlord addressed their poor living conditions.
The landlord did not comply and filed an eviction notice based on nonpayment of rent. But at the Motion to Determine Rent hearing, the client was issued a reduced amount of $100 per month of rent required to deposit into the court registry. Additionally, the landlord was forced to address the infestation.
Due in large part to the pro bono efforts of Grekos and Adams, the win has allowed the disabled woman and her husband to remain in safe housing and save a total of $700 during the pendency of the case.
