On December 5, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. EST, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (“ITA”) will be hosting a webinar to discuss data privacy issues. Webinar participants will hear from Commerce privacy experts on the Obama Administration’s privacy blueprint. There also will be an update on significant international data privacy developments such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (“APEC”) forum’s work to implement the Cross-Border Privacy Rules (“CBPRs”) system and the U.S.-European Union and U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Frameworks. Aaron Burstein, Policy Advisor of the Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration and one of the key architects of the Obama Administration’s privacy blueprint, will participate. ITA Associate Director Josh Harris, who has worked for the last six years to launch and implement the APEC CBPRs system, will also be a speaker. Finally, David Ritchie and Christopher Hoff, who co-administer the U.S.-EU and U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Frameworks and work closely with counterparts in Europe on this program, will provide an overview of these important mechanisms to meet the requirements of EU and Swiss data protection laws.
